Therapists for college students near Boulder, CO
Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m a psychotherapist based in Durango, Colorado, offering both in-person and online therapy for adults who are seeking personal growth, reconnection, and a deeper sense of belonging—to self, others, and the natural world. I work with individuals and groups navigating life transitions, perfectionism, anxiety, and attachment wounds. Many of the people I work with feel called toward therapy that is experiential, relational, and different from talk therapy alone. My work is rooted in the study of attachment and human development, and shaped by years of training in nature-based and equine-assisted psychotherapy. I draw on a holistic, relational approach that honors the intelligence of the body, the nervous system, and nature’s rhythms. Our work together will support you in re-sensitizing to your inner experience, reconnecting with your innate wisdom, and restoring your sense of vitality and belonging.
You deserve a therapist who understands your life in all its complexity. My clients are individuals and couples working through anxiety, depression, grief, identity questions, and strain in their relationships. Many have struggled to find a therapist who can help them feel comfortable exploring more challenging parts of their lives. A lot of my work is with men who learned early that self-reliance was supposed to be enough. I also specialize in working with LGBTQ+ clients and with people exploring nonmonogamy and kink. I want that to be a place of affirmation, not something you have to explain or defend. My approach is grounded in Internal Family Systems. I'm a Certified IFS therapist and have served as a teaching assistant for the IFS Institute. IFS meets the parts of you that feel stuck with curiosity instead of judgment. I also draw on CBT, psychodynamic, and relational work. Before this, I spent a decade in business, government, and nonprofits. That background gives me a feel for the real-world pressures people carry into the room. Reaching out is often the hardest part. Whether you're feeling stuck or just ready to understand yourself better, I'd be glad to talk. I see clients virtually across New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, and I offer a free 15-minute consultation.
If you're interested in working through childhood complexity or pain, or are wondering why present relationships sometimes feel dysfunctional or stressful, we'd likely be a great fit. Our time together will blend both past and present, and will help you learn what parts of your history are unconsciously influencing your present.
What is your relationship with food like? Is meal time an unavoidable chore, or something you find yourself obsessing over? Maybe the thought of certain foods, or even seeing them in the store sends you into a tailspin. If you work hard to limit your intake, postpone it, or try to eliminate it by any means necessary, you may have an eating disorder (ED). I have extensive knowledge and experience at outpatient, inpatient and residential levels of specialty care for EDs. I’ve come to know that there is no such thing as the “classic patient,” and the manifestation of an ED occurs for everyone at unique times regardless of socioeconomic status, faith, sexuality or race. I can help explore your relationship with nutrition and your body, enhance your strengths and support network, and guide you as you build a foundation of unconditional respect for yourself, that fosters growth and preparedness for the next phase in your life.

I believe in creating a safe, supportive space where clients can explore their experiences and grow at their own pace. I specialize in working with individuals navigating anxiety, life transitions, stress management, and identity development. I also have a passion for supporting counselors and counselors-in-training through supervision and professional development. I specialize in helping individuals recovery from eating disorders, disordered eating, compulsive/obligatory exercise, body image distress and associated anxiety and depression. I practice virtually in Colorado so accessing counseling is flexible and convenient. I understand the challenges of academic rigor at Mines and have worked with many Mines students -undergrad and grad. Fun fact: I majored in Chemistry and decided in the end I was more interested in people than molecules. I've been supporting people in eating recovery for over a decade. My clients tend to find me approachable, non-judgmental, and action oriented.
My professional experience has provided opportunities to work in a variety of clinical settings including correctional & substance abuse facilities. However, my work as a Child Welfare Caseworker has strongly driven my passion for working with children, adolescents, and adults as it relates to previous & current trauma, adoption, attachment, and relationship issues. Also specializing in anxiety, depression, grief/loss, adjustment, and other areas of concern. Together we will explore how negative thoughts and experiences have reinforced the perception of oneself and outside world, and how to replace negative thinking patterns to increase self-worth leading to fulfilling relationships and connections. I view the counseling process as forming a trusting relationship with you to explore the nature of who you are, why you are, and the nature of the problems you face. I use an eclectic approach including a variety of counseling theories to meet an individual where they are at as a way to address their personal needs. I am passionate about helping individuals determine or rediscover their values and beliefs which create their true authentic self, as my work is grounded in empathy, non-judgement, and inclusivity. Finding the right therapist to meet your needs is crucial, I am available as you take the next steps toward your mental health.

Do you find yourself feeling like your plate is overflowing? Are you spending a lot of your time worrying about things that are out of your control? I believe, together, we can help build this life you imagine. I specialize in working with adults who struggle with anxiety, stress, and life transitions. Maybe you’ve dealt with stress and anxiety for as long as you can remember, or maybe it is something that has stemmed from a specific situation that recently occurred. Either way, I am here to support you and empower you to be able to better manage these concerns.
As we grow and face the world, so too grows the number of challenges and responsibilities we face. And with this increase comes the possibility for new anxieties, new depression, and new traumas to arise. Often we can be left feeling unprepared because life rarely gives us a roadmap to dealing with these complex issues. Therapy can be a daunting task, but that doesn't mean it's not a good thing. Seeking help is the first step to starting a positive change and it is only once we embrace that change that we can reach a happier and healthier place. If you've been struggling more often then not, I encourage you to reach out. Whether it's just needing a safe place to talk about life's stressors, building coping skills, seeking solutions, or beginning to work on long held traumas, we will work together to face these issues as a team.
I am a mental health and addiction counselor who has experienced the impact of mental health issues on myself, my family, my friends, and my community. I understand the importance of a safe, nonjudgmental space for exploration, introspection, and healing. I enjoy using creative modalities in conjunction with traditional theoretical frameworks to allow clients to explore challenges and questions from multiple perspectives. I bring experience, compassion, and advocacy to mental health, addiction, and recovery. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults. I use a sense of curiosity and the gifts my spiritual and scholastic mentors have given me to help guide my clients on their journey of discovery. A current curiosity has led me to an increased understanding of the neuroscience behind addiction and how the mind interacts with our bodies and the world around us. I believe everyone has a chance at discovering themselves and finding a fulfilling path in life no matter what your background. If you want to discover your true self, build coping skills to help with sobriety, depression, or anxiety, or if you need help processing trauma, please reach out for a free initial consultation.

Hello! My passion is working with university students to live their best lives with healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. I’m now in private practice down the road from CSU and across from the vet school. And I am licensed in both Colorado and Wyoming (with office space in Fort Collins, CO and Laramie, WY) I trained at the University of Illinois for both medical school (2005) and residency (2009) in psychiatry. I offer both psychotherapy and medication management. While I have expertise in many mental illnesses, I have a strong interest in ADHD, sleep disorders, women’s health issues, trauma, depression, and anxiety. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to thrive! Feel free to send me an email!
