Therapists for college students near University of Pennsylvania
Hello! My name is Halley and, as a therapist, it is my intention to look beyond the symptoms being presented to identify the root of the problem and to make space for you as a whole person, not just a diagnosis or a label. This often looks like examining our most intimate relationships, the family system, and what connections or patterns exist between the two. If you find yourself often wondering "Why am I like this?" and "Why does this keep happening?,” then we may be a good fit - especially if you have been in therapy before, feel like you have the tools or knowledge, and like you should be able to do something differently. It is my belief that our most intimate relationships impact us and how we move through the world. My hope is to help you look at those relationships, to better understand them, and to identify your role in creating your own experience. I often attempt to do this by asking questions, making observations, and inviting you to do the same. Therapy is messy. Therapy is not linear. Therapy is a process. I would be honored to be a part of yours and be alongside you as you learn about yourself while achieving the long-term healing and awareness that you deserve.

Abby has worked in a variety of different therapeutic areas including inpatient and outpatient neuropsychiatric assessment, outpatient community mental health, crisis intervention, in home services such as Wraparound BHRS and Family Based, the school setting, and private practice. Abby is an eclectic therapist that utilizes a person centered, and strength-based form of therapy derived from the Family Systems Model, as well as concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness techniques. Her clinical experience has allowed her to focus on diverse needs including trauma, substance abuse/dual diagnosis, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment issues, gender issues, sexual identity issues, LGBTQIA, grief and loss, sexual abuse and victimization, patterns of codependency, self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation, family conflict, Geek and Gaming Culture, life transitions, parenting, and pregnancy/prenatal/postpartum/infertility. Abby has taken trainings to support the transgender community with transitioning. Abby has specific training in QPR (Question Persuade Refer) including having completed the train-the-trainer component as a QPR Gatekeeper, CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management), and DCORT (Disaster Crisis Outreach and Refer Team). During her time spent as the Team Lead (assistant manager) of a Pennsylvania county crisis intervention program, she was also on the county’s DCORT team. All of these certifications are designed to help mental health professionals respond within the community to reduce the rate of suicide and trauma symptoms associated with impactful events. Abby is currently part of Westmoreland County’s Suicide Task Force, Ray of Hope, and the county L.O.S.S. Team. She is also a board member of Metamorphosis Begins. Abby utilizes evidence-based approaches to help clients to achieve their goals. She believes that individuals are the experts in their lives, but sometimes get “stuck” and need help “getting out”. Abby works with her clients to help them to access their strengths and develop approaches that are centered on their personal objectives. Through this approach, the client is able to build their “toolbox” by gaining “tools”, or skills, to help them move forward with the healthy life they desire.

I love working with people of all ages who are seeking to understand themselves and other significant people in their lives! It is my joy to help my clients find peace and make meaning of both the usual challenges in life and the events that threaten to rob us of hope. My work life before becoming a therapist in 1997 included working in child welfare, teaching in China, and volunteering in religious activities. As a therapist my training and experience have been focused on themes of attachment, relationships, grief, loss, trauma, and spirituality. If you are wondering who I am as a person, I am a spouse, mother of four grown children, "Mimi" to five grandchildren, and oldest sibling in a large tribe. When not working I love to read, make quilts, play board games, cook and just spend time with the people I love.
At some point along the journey, our stories demand to be told. Whether through painful emotional and physical symptoms, relationship struggles, or other interruptive experiences, our lives catch up to us. They ask for our attention. Therapy is a place where, together, we can pay closer attention to your story and the person you are becoming. We are all always in process. I believe that we can experience true healing in a human encounter, and I strive to deeply listen to my clients, bringing curiosity and attention to the parts of you that may have gone unnoticed. Approach to Therapy My counseling approach is rooted in relational psychodynamic therapy, which focuses on patterns and themes from early childhood and how they show up in your life today. This approach also emphasizes the relationship between the therapist and client as a vehicle for healing and change. It’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with, and it may take you some time to discern the right fit. I respect the vulnerability and bravery required to step into this work, and aim to meet you with humility, curiosity, and a responsible awareness of my own intersecting identities. Each person brings unique concerns and needs, and I am committed to ongoing research and training to provide the best care I can. I draw from a variety of approaches, including attachment-based therapy, family systems work, liberation psychology, Internal Family Systems (informed, not certified), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Narrative-Focused Trauma Therapy. Background: I have worked with at-risk youth, college students, and folks from all walks of life in outpatient and community mental health settings. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Music and Theater, and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a Concentration in Trauma and Abuse from the Seattle School (2023). Outside of therapy, I enjoy lots of things, including yoga, performing arts, poetry, and being outside!

Hello! Throughout my ten years in the mental health field, I have worked in settings that range from inpatient to outpatient, as well as school and mobile. My clients represent all stages across the lifespan. My passion is helping clients to address a variety of needs, many of which stem from prior traumatic or dysfunctional patterns, as well as to help them find a more fulfilling balance. I often see clients suffer from imposter and/or Wonder Woman syndrome, frequently manifesting as suicidal ideation, depression, and/or anxiety. I use an integrated approach rooted in feminist theory, and that focuses on how trauma currently shows up in our lives. I find this is crucial to break the cycle. I believe that clients of all genders are harmed by societal norms, roles, and stigmas; we all can benefit from working to break down those barriers for the sake of healthy emotional expression. There is nothing better in my line of work than watching clients heal and grow to become thrivers - their own champions. Please reach out to discuss a potential relationship!
