Hello! My name is Christy Nyakana, and I have been a licensed therapist for 19 years. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with my Master of Social Work degree in 2003. Since then, I have been very fortunate to work with amazingly diverse and ever-resilient clients. I have provided therapy in psychiatric inpatient settings, schools, community mental health clinics, Dr.’s offices, private practice, and military bases. Currently, I provide online teletherapy through a HIPAA compliant platform. I have significant experience with adjustment issues, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, women's issues, military culture, and pre/post-surgical bariatric counseling. I am an LGBTQ+ informed therapist who is knowledgeable about the kink and polyamory/ENM community. Additionally, I take diversity and racism seriously. I am a supporter of LGBTQ+, BLM and Women's Rights. I previously worked in Seton Hill University's Counseling Center, providing individual therapy to college students for a wide variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, LGBTQIA+ issues, relationship and interpersonal problems, grief, trauma, academic stress, adjustment to college, and identity exploration. My approach is relaxed, conversational, and at times fun! I am non-judgmental, welcoming, and I collaborate with you to create a personalized treatment plan. I blend traditional talk therapy (where we explore your thoughts and feelings to increase insight) and skill building (where we practice techniques to soothe and minimize distress.) You'll find me at Elements Counseling & Wellness Spa in the east end of Pittsburgh. We're a 15-20 minute drive from most of Pittsburgh's universities, but I also offer telehealth sessions. I have also worked in psychiatric inpatient programs as well as eating disorder treatment programs. My therapeutic style is integrative, which means that our work together will draw on various approaches determined by your concerns and goals. My hope is for us to build a trusting relationship that will allow for honest reflection, helpful challenge, and ultimately positive change so that you may be able to lead a more fulfilling life.
